Short Biography

Upon completion of his Ramón y Cajal fellowship, Hannes gained his tenure position in 2018. Since 2019 he is Associate Research Professor at the Barcelona School of Economics. He is affiliated to the CEPR Development Economics program since 2015. He publishes in leading journals in economics and political science such as the American Economic Review (AER), the American Political Science Review (APSR), the Journal of the European Economic Association (JEEA), the Journal of Public Economics and the American Journal of Economics: Macro (AEJ: Macro). In the last three years Hannes has specialized in the use of supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods in applications in economic and political science. He directs two research projects which leverage millions of newspaper texts and high-resolution satellite images, teaches text mining at the Barcelona GSE Data Science M.Sc. and collaborates with the Spanish central bank (BdE) in the adoption and integration of these methods in a research agreement. His work on the prediction of conflict has been incorporated in reports for the IMF, the Universal Rights Group and a large UN/World Bank study on conflict prevention.
