The world is facing unprecedented environmental challenges, from climate change and biodiversity loss to water and air pollution and the depletion of natural resources. These threats not only endanger the well-being of present and future generations but also pose significant risks to economic stability and global prosperity.
The IAE recognizes the crucial role that economic analysis and policy play in addressing environmental challenges. By integrating sustainability into our research, institutional practices, and policy recommendations, we aim to contribute to solutions that balance economic well-being with environmental responsibility.
In response to this responsibility, the IAE established its Sustainability Committee in November 2021 to reduce the institute's environmental impact and strengthen CSIC's overall commitment to sustainability. In February 2024, we launched the 2nd IAE Environmental Action Plan (2024-2027) , building on our 2021 plan with new initiatives to further reduce our ecological footprint. A key priority is striving for net-zero carbon emissions, aligning with Europe’s goal of climate neutrality by 2050. Since energy consumption represents the largest environmental impact for an economic research institute like the IAE, decarbonization remains at the core of our efforts. However, our new plan also introduces resource optimization measures to further reduce our environmental footprint.
One of the most significant initiatives of this second plan was the installation of solar panels on the institute's roof in December 2024. These panels supply clean, renewable energy, supporting our daily operations and reinforcing our sustainability goals related to reducing our carbon emissions.
