Environmental, Resources and Energy Economics
Research Lines
Mar Reguant's research focuses on the intersection of industrial organization, energy economics, and environmental policy. Her work blends theoretical modeling with empirical analysis to address pressing questions related to energy markets and climate policy. A key area of her research examines electricity market design, with an emphasis on how market structure and regulatory interventions impact efficiency, competition, and market dynamics. She also explores carbon pricing mechanisms, such as emissions trading systems and carbon border adjustments, analyzing their effects on firm behavior, market outcomes, and environmental objectives. Her research employs econometric methods and high-dimensional data to examine current policy questions in the energy transition. Overall, her work enhances our understanding of how market mechanisms and policy tools can foster sustainable energy transitions while addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
Short Biography
Mar Reguant is an economist specializing in energy economics and climate change. Born in Súria, Catalonia, in 1984, she earned her Economics degree at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in 2006 before completing her Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2011. Over her career, she has worked at Stanford University and the Toulouse School of Economics. Currently, she is an ICREA researcher at the Institute for Economic Analysis (IAE-CSIC), a professor at Northwestern University, and affiliated with the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE).
Her research focuses on electricity market auctions, environmental regulations, and the energy transition. Reguant has explored the dynamics of electricity markets, particularly how startup costs of power plants influence strategic behavior, and the impact of climate policies on energy-intensive industries. Her work combines theoretical and empirical analysis to enhance renewable energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
Reguant has received numerous recognitions, including an ERC Consolidator Grant, the Banco Sabadell Foundation Award for Economic Research in 2017, the Premi Nacional de Recerca al Talent Jove 2023, and the Clara Campoamor National Research Award in 2024. She is actively involved in understanding the deployment of climate policies globally. To that end, she collaborated with the California Air Resources Board to study their cap-and-trade market. She also served on French President Emmanuel Macron’s advisory team to address economic challenges stemming from climate change.
