Research Lines
Anastasia specializes in political institutions and processes (e.g., studies of political regimes, quality of democracy, regime transition, decentralization and federalism, environmental politics and activism, sustainable development, etc.). Her research builds on the studies of democracy and democratization (including civil society, protests, freedom of mass media, social media) and their implications for global governance and international relations. Her earlier research analyses the impact of the EU on democratization in Post-Communist regions and environmental governance, causes and consequences of democratization, regime transition and decentralization, among other issues. Anastasia has published nine books and was a guest-editor and co-editor of seven special issues in the fields of sustainable development, global governance, environmental governance, democratization and democracy. Her area-expertise include Eurasia, China, Post-Communism, Central Asia, the Arctic, Eastern and Central Europe as well as world-wide comparative analysis. She welcomes MA and PhD supervision of students interested in these topics.
Short Biography
Anastassia Obydenkova is a Research Scientist at the Institute for Economic Analysis of the Spanish National Research Council (IAE-CSIC). Previously, she was an Associate Professor at Uppsala University (Sweden). She holds a PhD in Political and Social Science from the European University Institute in Florence and MA from the Central European University (Budapest-Vienna). Anastassia was awarded various research fellowships and grants by Robert Schuman Center (Paris), Yale, Harvard, and Princeton Universities, among others. Anastassia is a member of editorial boards of such journals as Sustainability, Problems of Post-Communism, Post-Communist Economies, Eastern European Economics, and Politics and Governance. She was also a guest-editor of a few special issues (e.g., in Climatic Change). Anastasia held multiple teaching and research appointments around the world, at Carleton University (Canada), University of Zurich, MacMillan Center at Yale University, Gonzaga University in Florence, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Barcelona Institute for International Studies, St. Louse University in Madrid, Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies, and Davis Center at Harvard University. She has large experience of teaching at post-graduate level various PhD and MA courses (on methodology, geopolitics, comparative politics and regionalism, sustainable development in addition to general courses on political science and international relations). She has supervised over twenty MA students and currently is a (co-)supervisor of a few PhD students from Germany, Italy, and Sweden. Anastasia encourages applications for doctoral supervision from ongoing and future MA and PhD students working on aspects related to her area-studies expertise as well as her research agenda outlined above.
