Hugo´s main research area is Monetary Economics. In particular he has worked on the monetary transmission mechanism from two perspectives. On the one hand, he has analyzed how the way monetary policy is implemented by central banks may influence the behavior of short term interest rates. On the other hand, part of his work deals with understanding how changes in the monetary policy stance affect economic activity through the provision of credit by financial intermediaries and the endogenous expansions and contractions of the balance sheets of banks.
